Conservation

The preservation and careful management of the environment and of natural resources.

Ectothermic

(cold-blooded) An organism that regulates its body temperature largely by exchanging heat with its surroundings.

Exothermic

(cold-blooded) An organism that regulates its body temperature largely by exchanging heat with its surroundings.

Constrictor

Any of various non-venomous snakes, such as the pythons and boas, that coil around and squeeze their prey to suffocate and kill it.

Carnivore

An animal that consumes primarily the flesh of other animals.

Herbivore

An animal that feeds chiefly on plants.

Omnivore

An organism which gets its food energy from both plant and animal material.

Carrion Eater (Scavenger)

An animal that feeds on dead or decaying matter. (e.g. Vulture or Hyena)

Invertebrate

An animal without a backbone. Invertebrates include insects, arachnids (spiders & ticks), gastropods (snails & slugs), crustaceans (crayfish & isopods), centipedes, worms, and others.

Scales

Threatened Species

Lanner Falcon

Medium-size bird of prey found in Africa, Southeast Europe and parts of Asia. These raptors are found in open country such as savannas where they are one of the only recorded birds of prey that exhibit cooperative hunting techniques. Mated pairs hunt together with the male bird often flushing prey for the female to capture. Small groups of Lanner Falcons have even been seen hunting in packs. Although they are very similar to Peregrine Falcons they do not hunt by diving but through horizontal flight where they can reach speeds of over 90 mph. Lanner Falcons eat primarily birds captured in flight but also hunt small mammals and large insects.

Rococo Toad

Sometimes referred to as the Schneider’s Toad, the Rococo Toad is one of the largest toads in the world. Dwelling primarily in rainforest habitats, this toad is native to South American Countries such as Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay among others. Large glands, called parotoid glands, located behind the Rococo Toad’s eyes and on their thighs possess a poison that offer some protection through a potential predator’s learned behavior. Toads are typically terrestrial and do not possess teeth whereas frogs are most commonly aquatic and do possess teeth. Most frogs and toads use their eyes to aid in swallowing food!

African Spurred Tortoise
African Spurred Tortoise

Representing the 3rd largest tortoise species on the planet, the African Spurred Tortoise is capable of reaching weights close to 200 pounds! These reptiles are found in the sub-Sahara region of Africa where they graze on grasses and seek refuge from the heat in deep burrows they dig. African Spurred Tortoises are known for having a mild temperament and a lifespan of over 100 years.
